The potential application areas of automatic reading software (or machines) are numerous. One of the most successful applications is converting scanned books or sheets to text and graphics. The result can be used in digital libraries or in automated offices. Other applications include sorting checks in banks, reading addresses of envelopes and automatically sorting mails, helping the blind to read, pen-based interaction between human and machines and many other applications.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the branch of pattern recognition that studies automatic reading. The ultimate goal of OCR is to imitate the human ability to read at much faster rate by associating symbolic identities with images of characters. Up to now, various OCR systems for English, Arabic and many other languages are developed, but there isn’t any usable and industrial Persian OCR system. Although Arabic is very similar to Persian, but because the Persian fonts shapes differs a lot from Arabic ones, current Arabic commercial products such as Sakhr or Iris can’t be used efficiently. |
